he's right about petrochemical product pricing. one would need a little more info to even give a ballpark price, where do you live, what is the pitch of the roof? does one have to remove existing shingles?

My guess would be no. Everyone has their eye on gas and oil prices and the fluctuations are frequent. The shingles you buy today may have been made a couple of months ago. By the time shingles from the cheaper oil are made, oil prices will probably go up and manufacturers won't adjust wholesale prices in the interim.
